Dr. Ray­monde Lisa Bourque Bearskin

Lisa is a Cree/Métis mem­ber of Beaver Lake Cree Nation, in Treaty 6 Ter­ri­to­ry. She is an Asso­ciate Pro­fes­sor and new researcher with Thomp­son Riv­er Uni­ver­si­ty’s School of Nurs­ing. After 25 years as a Reg­is­tered Nurse, Lisa began her teach­ing career work­ing with Maskwacis Com­mu­ni­ty College/Health Cen­ter in Alber­ta and Arc­tic Nurs­ing pro­gram in Iqaluit Nunavut and the Uni­ver­si­ty of Alber­ta, Fac­ul­ty of Nurs­ing where she devel­oped and deliv­ered Indige­nous-nurs­ing ini­tia­tives. Cur­rent­ly, she is work­ing with nurs­es, health care prac­ti­tion­ers, aca­d­e­mics and var­i­ous com­mu­ni­ties to enhance Indige­nous nurs­ing knowl­edge and social deter­mi­nants of health, focus­ing on Indige­nous well­ness that main­tains the cul­tur­al integri­ty of nurs­es prac­tice and sup­ports Indige­nous clients’ sov­er­eign­ty. Recent­ly, Lisa and an inter­dis­ci­pli­nary com­mu­ni­ty-dri­ven team of schol­ars and com­mu­ni­ty mem­bers, have been award­ed a CIHR plan­ning grant towards an appli­ca­tion to estab­lish a CIHR fund­ed Indige­nous Research Cen­tre in Secwépemc ter­ri­to­ry. Lisa was award­ed her Ph.D. in Nurs­ing in 2014 and received the Cana­di­an Nurs­es Asso­ci­a­tion Award for the Top 150 Nurs­es. She served as the Pres­i­dent of the Cana­di­an Indige­nous Nurs­es Asso­ci­a­tion (CINA) from 2013–2017 advanc­ing Indige­nous nurs­ing lead­er­ship. Lisa’s pas­sion is to advo­cate Indige­nous peo­ple’s (First Nation, Inu­it, and Métis) right to cul­tur­al­ly appro­pri­ate health care and to work with­in the health care sys­tem to enhance main­stream health care’s knowl­edge of Indige­nous health that is respon­sive to the client and nurse’s cul­tur­al integrity.
